Symphonic Band

Symphonic Band is the largest component of the CATA band program.  There are three class periods of symphonic band offered every school day for the entire school year.  Several times each school year these three different classes will combine to form one large concert band ensemble for performances both on and off campus.

The Symphonic Band curriculum expands upon techniques, concepts, and literature that are taught in the middle school band curriculum.  Students enrolled in Symphonic Band will further develop their mastery of scales, extend their range, learn to read more complex rhythms, build their sight reading skills, and expand their understanding of and ability to execute aspects of ensemble performance such as balance, blend, intonation, phrasing, and musical effect.

Students enrolled in Symphonic Band will have the opportunity to audition for Union County, South Central District and North Carolina honor band clinics, perform at MPA, and play in small ensembles.

Any student who was registered for middle school band in 8th grade is eligible to register for symphonic band at CATA.  Students who have not been enrolled in a band class in a year or more may be asked to play a placement audition before being scheduled for Symphonic Band.

If you wish to register for Symphonic Band, please email band director Leslie Craven (leslie.craven@ucps.k12.nc.us).
